Gitga’at Nation has experienced the first fight against the energy company Enbridge in 2006. At that time, a lot of organizations and first nations of Canada joined this fight. This quickly became the biggest event in Canada. After ten years battle against Enbridge company through the court, Gitga’at Nation has won the battle against Enbridge with the helping of the people from other organizations and other first nation of Canada. While Canadian focus on this event, liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry stealthily involve and plan to make a tanker route which they call clean in Kitimat Canada. Even though LNG industry Canada has successfully implemented their plan on October 1 2018, Gitga’at did not believe them and continue to fight against them. For this blog campaign, Gitaga’ga will introduce their culture and animals live in their territory. Also, we will talk about how we deal with the other energy company.
AUDIENCE
This blog campaign will attract animal right people and environmentalists. Gitga’at Nation will introduce the animals especially the different whales in water area of northwest coast of Canada mostly in Kitimat. Since we will also talk about event between us and other energy companies. We will also welcome people from Enbridge and other energy companies especially LNG industry. We will introduce the disadvantages of making tanker route in the water area of Fin Island, Kitimat where humpback whales and killer whale live. Also, we welcome other organizations and first nations to join this blog campaign to talk about the interest of our same territory and protect our land together.
RESEARCH
As Enbridge company wanted to plan to transport crude oil on supertanker through the Kitimat fjord system, it would affected the local animals’ lives. The oil will damage the land and water in Kitimat. This was the reason why Gitga’at Nation people strongly disagree their plan and also became the biggest event at that time. It made Kitimat famous. Northwest coast of Canada is always home for the first nation of Canada and the different whales. They have lived in here together about 10,000 years. They do not want Enbridge to damage the their land and water. They do not want them affect their life with first nation and the nature such as whale and human and forest and human.
On October 1. 2018. liquefied natural gas Canada, also is called LNG Canada announces the start of construction on new LNG exporting plant in Kitimat. This time other companies want to transport LNG to Asia markets. As Asia become the huge market to the western world, a huge profit has waited to be explored by the other companies. There are only two transportations can connect to the Asian market in Canada. One is air transport and the other is shipping. Air transport is too expensive. The cheap and easy way to transport their products will be the shipping. This is the reason why Enbridge want to make a route in the northwest coast of Canada to transport their oil to oil and took the case through court 10 years and never give up in those 10 years. Now LNG industry want to make a tanker route to the Asia to transport their energy which they say is clean. But still Gitga’at not believe them.
